Wedding picture of Robert Reid Judd & Emma Altheria Ratcliffe

My great grandparents were married in the Logan Temple on 13 March 1885. My podcast is of my grandmother's memories of her parents, Robert & Emma Judd. Robert and Emma had ten children, raising eight of them to adulthood.

Robert and Emma are buried in the Grantsville City Cemetery. Their parents, William Riley Judd and Anne Jane Reid, James Ratcliffe and Emma Jane Eastham, and most of their siblings are buried in the Grantsville Cemetery. In addition, their children, their children’s spouses and most of their siblings are buried in the Grantsville Cemetery; in fact, over forty headstone markers have the Judd name on them.

My Grandmother would often to say to me, “my generation is one of physical toil and your generation is one of mental anguish.” I understand that statement better now than when I first heard it many years ago. Life can bring many trials that also bring "mental anguish." Returning to BYU after forty + years can feel like “mental anguish.” However difficult school might be, the information that is available to us has no end. With this knowledge, we can accomplish so much. A Family History graduate has so many options.

The Gold Rush of 1849
Riley, not yet 17, begged his parents for permission to let him go to the “gold fields of California.” They reluctantly consented.
Wm Judd was listed on an 1850 census in California.
Two years later Riley joined the Norton wagon train in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and returned home to Salt Lake.

The Judd family heads west

The Judd family waited in Council Bluffs for about a month. Those heading to Salt Lake could not leave until the group was large enough to offer protection against the Indians. By the middle of July there were enough Saints to form a company. The name of the company was The Allen Taylor Company. (I found this infomation in Mormon Pioneer Companies Crossing The Plains 1847-1868 -- FHL #289.3016 B291m, 1990 copy 2). I was so happy to find this book!

Spring of 1841 - Nauvoo

At last in the spring of 1841, William Riley's family arrived in Nauvoo. How happy Teresa was! She was a devoted Latter-Day Saint. Her one thought, from the day that she was baptized, was to gather with the Saints; finally she was in their midst. The Judd family were faithful attendants at the meetings in the grove to hear the Prophet Joseph Smith preach.

Death of the Prophet Joseph Smith
In the spring of 1844, the Judd family moved to Springfield, seeking employment, as there was a demand for coopers in that area. The Judds had only lived in Springville for two or three months when they received word that the Prophet Joseph Smith had been assassinated. Their home became a home of mourning--they could not have felt sadder if the Prophet had been a member of their own family. Parents of William Riley Judd

Thomas Alfred Judd married Teresa Hastings 27 December 1830, in West, Leeds, District of Johnstown, Canada. They embraced the gospel and were baptized by John E. Page, 26 July 1836. In 1838, they sold their farm so they could gather with the Saints. "On the road to Nauvoo we passed through Kirtland and camped not far from the Temple and were given permission to go through it. I well remember the awe we felt as we entered the temple. Mother and Father looked very serious and spoke quite low and cautioned us children not to speak at all...The impression remains with me today." (As told by Margaret Judd Clawson, sister to William Riley Judd and daughter of Thomas and Teresa Judd.)

Annie Margaret Judd was the third child of Robert Reid Judd, who was the son of William Riley Judd. Annie Margaret Judd, with her husband Clyde Williams, are pictured in front of their adobe brick home, which is nearly obscured by the tall poplar trees that lined the front walk.
